Episode 634: A Discussion of Jewel’s A Night Without Armor!

On this week’s episode, Rachael Tillman, Samantha Nickerson, and John King join the nocturnal jousting in a conversation about Jewel’s A Night Without Armor. This is a taste of what will be coming to my Patreon content, once I launch a Patreon page for this podcast.

  1. Well, I would first like to draw your attention to ‘Amror’ in the episode title.

Anyway, as to the Patreon, these craft discussions are my favourite parts of the show, and I’d be happy to ‘patreonise’ (verbs are hard) the show to get them as bonuses. Not so much the mixtapes. Your musical taste is very eclectic – mine is…music is an aid to memory. Or noise. Or the round in trivia nights where I crash and burn. So ‘meh’ to them.

Maybe Patreon will have a decent phone app by the time you get yours going. Here’s hopin’.

This particular episode is a good example of a bonus episode. Multiple, nice, voices, a more accessible work, good humour and it’s not going out to promote a book so much as to discuss it. A mediocre poet such as me could learn to write better by seeing what can be published – Billy Collins is inaccessibly good, Jewel is someone to aspire to be.

    Very good value.

  2. And I wil now add what was nagging at me yesterday while I was coughing and spluttering like Mel Blanc in Speed Buggy (TV Series 1973–1983) – IMDb.

    A (k)night without armor
    In a savage land.
    Her fast gun’s for hire.
    She’s the calling wind.
    A soldier of fortune.
    Is the woman called Jewel.

  3. Hi, DJ.

Poor Speed Buggy needed a tune-up. Mel Blanc had to work so hard, not just doing the voice, but the sound effects, too.

I don’t quite recall if Jewel’s allusion to Have Gun Will Travel or to the film A Night Without Armour was clear, or if it was a homonym pun that just seemed appropriate, or maybe both an allusion and a pun. None of the poems was unforgettable.

Jimmies Stewart and Carter are subjects of future conversation, I hope.

Thank you for pointing out the typo. I’ve been squinting at a bad external monitor for my laptop for a while, which makes typing precarious.

I once told Billy Collins that he is the reason I started writing poetry again after a decade’s cessation. He wisely told me not to blame him.

    Selah,

    With gratitude,

    John
